LibreBase to MariaDB (MySQL) on Synology NAS Drive DS923+

Step 1:  Install MariaDB and PHPMyAdmin in Synology NAS Drive

Connect to your Synology NAS Dashboard. Select >  Package Center > MariaDB 10 > Install. Once the database is installed the next time you open Package Center it will show an Open button. Select > Open and note the Enabled TCP/IP connection Port. The default is 3306 but a different port number may be allocated such as 3308.

Similarly install phpMyAdmin. If it is installed the button will show Open. To run phpMyAdmin you will need to launch it from your browser to Synology NAS Drive IP Address. The NAS IP Address is shown on the lower right hand corner of the Dashboard under System Health. e.g. LAN1   192.168.1.232

Step 2:  Access phpMyAdmin from your browser

To access your phpMyAdmin you need to enter the IP Address of your NAS drive as shown in the Dashboard.

You can now Import a csv table from your spreadsheet like the table shown below.

You can edit and change records and fields with phpMyAdmin.

Step 3: Connect LibreOffice Base (frontend) application to MariaDB database (backend)

This can be done using ODBC, JDBC or Direct Connector. The Direct Connector works best. To do this you need to download the "mariadb-connector-odbc-3.2.3-win64.msi" from the MariaDB website and run it on your client. Once you have done that you can directly connect LibreBase to MariaDB locally.

Before you do that you will need to setup user/passwords in MariaDB using phpMyAdmin with the correct permissions.

Step 4: Install LibreOffice on your personal computer.

Step 5: Run LibreOffice. Select > Base Database

Select > Connect to an existing database, instead of the default > Create a new database.
From the Dropdown menu select > MySQL/MariaDB > Next.

You then select the third option > Connect directly (using MariaDB connector). If you did not install the direct connector in Step 3 above only two options will be displayed.

You will be prompted to Enter > Database name: > Server:  >  Port:  >  respectively.  See the sample values above. The default port number is 3306.  Click > Next.

Enter >  User name and pick the > Password required box and then > Next.

Select > Finish to proceed the the database. You will be asked for a LibreOffice database File name: and Save as type: > ODF Database (*.odb) leave this as default. Click > Save

You will be prompted for User name: and Password. Enter them and select > OK.

Once it is connected you will see the MariaDB tables in LibreOffice Base as shown above. You can work directly with the Open Source database using LibreBase as the front end.
